Student Assemblies

On Wednesday and Thursday, the building administration met with each grade level in the auditorium. We introduced ourselves and set the tone for the upcoming school year. The following are highlights from our message.

Core Values

My expectations as a principal are simple and represent my core values as a person. I want MMHS to be a place of:

  • Pride
  • Respect
  • Empathy
  • Professionalism
  • High Expectations

During assemblies, students were very respectful and responsive, and I truly appreciated their attention. We have really great kids here at MMHS!

Cell Phones

Nationwide, schools are struggling with how to appropriately implement cell phone expectations. Students at MMHS are allowed to use their phones 3 times throughout the day: breakfast, lunch, and homeroom. That is it. They are not allowed to use their cell phones in the hallways or between classes. We are asking that parents, guardians, and family members respect these expectations and refrain from contacting their children outside of the allowed times. During a recent Mashpee school committee meeting, I asked that, as the new principal, I be given grace to continue with the cell phone expectations that were implemented last year. Please help us in ensuring your child only uses their cell phone during breakfast, lunch, and homeroom.

The Massachusetts Smoke-Free Workplace Law

The Smoke-Free Workplace Law, M.G.L. Ch. 270, §22, mandates that enclosed workplaces with one or more employees must be smoke-free. The state law intends to protect workers in enclosed workplaces from secondhand smoke exposure. The full text of the law and additional information is available at www.mass.gov/dph/mtcp.

PUBLIC SCHOOLS: Is smoking allowed in public schools and on public school property? No. The Smoke-Free Workplace Law prohibits smoking in all enclosed workplaces, including public and private schools. In addition, Massachusetts requires that all public schools through high school prohibit smoking on school grounds, on school buses, and at school-sponsored events. The law is commonly referred to as the “Education Reform Act” (MG.L. ch. 270, §22(b)(2); MGL c. 71, §§2A, 37H; c. 90, §7B(10)).

What does this mean at MMHS? Smoking and vaping are not allowed anywhere on school grounds, inside our school, or on our school buses. Students who are found vaping or smoking will receive consequences. Our goal is to teach students that the decisions they make now can develop into habits that, eventually, may turn into addiction. We want our students to be safe and healthy now and in the future.
