ELA MCAS Week Concluded

I want to express my sincere gratitude to our entire school community for approaching ELA MCAS week with both seriousness and enthusiasm. Your support made a tremendous difference! Our attendance was exceptional throughout the week, with students arriving well-rested and focused on Tuesday and Thursday for their tests. On Wednesday, we enjoyed two wonderful whole-school events that strengthened our school culture and provided a needed break between testing days.

Students vs Staff Hockey Game

For the first time since 2015, our students emerged victorious in the annual Student vs. Staff hockey game! The student team's exceptional performance was anchored by goalkeeper Patrick L., who maintained an impressive shutout for 45 minutes, only conceding a goal in the final 5 minutes of play.

I'm proud of how our students maintained their concentration and gave their best effort during the assessments. We plan to follow a similar format for Math MCAS week, which will take place May 5-9. Thank you again for helping make this important testing period both productive and positive.

Studentvs.StaffHockeyGame

For the first time since 2015, our students emerged victorious in the annual Student vs. Staff hockey game! The student team's exceptional performance was anchored by goalkeeper Patrick L., who maintained an impressive shutout for 45 minutes, only conceding a goal in the final 5 minutes of play.

The students took an early lead when Colin R. scored over the teacher's goaltender's left shoulder less than two minutes into the game. From there, they maintained control throughout the match. Colin added another goal to his tally, while Jacob Q. contributed two goals of his own, including a highlight-worthy backhand into the lower corner of the net after skillfully weaving through multiple defenders.

With five minutes remaining, the staff team finally got on the scoreboard with a penalty shot from Mrs. McMahon. They added one more goal with less than a minute left, bringing the final score to 4-2 in favor of the students.

This victory was particularly meaningful for our students who, as third, fourth, and fifth graders, had watched previous student teams fall short year after year. When their moment finally came, they rose to the occasion with both skill and determination. They celebrated their win with class and good sportsmanship, earning their place as just the third class in the 16-year history of this marquee event to claim victory during their time at Quashnet.

InternetSafetyPresentationwithRichardGuerry

We're excited to announce that Quashnet will be hosting Richard Guerry, a nationally recognized speaker on internet safety, social media, cyberbullying, and digital citizenship. Mr. Guerry speaks to students in grades 3-12 across the country, and we've been fortunate to secure his presentation at no cost to our district through a grant partnership with Bay Cove in Hyannis.

Presentation Schedule - Tuesday, April 29

  • 1:30-2:30 PM: Fifth and Sixth Grade Students
  • 2:30-3:30 PM: Third and Fourth Grade Students

Each presentation is specifically tailored to the age group attending. I was able to meet with Mr. Guerry on zoom to hear about the difference between the two presentations.

What Students Will Learn

  • Fifth and Sixth Graders: Safe smartphone use, cyberbullying prevention, responsible group chat behavior, and social media awareness
  • Third and Fourth Graders: Online gaming communication, safety measures for platforms like Roblox, and strategies to avoid clickbait

Following these presentations, Mrs. Pons will reinforce these lessons during Library and DLCS classes, addressing any questions students may have and expanding on key concepts. This content aligns with Massachusetts digital literacy learning standards.

Why This Matters for Our School

While online safety challenges affect students globally, we've experienced specific issues at Quashnet, including conflicts that begin in evening group chats and carry into school the next day, as well as problematic interactions between students on gaming platforms like Roblox and Fortnite. Mr. Guerry's visit is particularly relevant and valuable for our community.

For more information about Mr. Guerry and his work, please visit: https://www.iroc2.org/Internet_safety_speaker

I appreciate your partnership in promoting online safety for our students. If you have any questions, please contact me directly at eswitzer@mpspk12.org.

NewApproachtoStudentAwardsatQuashnet

During my first spring at Quashnet last year, I received consistent feedback from teachers, students, and parents that our end-of-year student awards format needed improvement. In response, I gathered input from staff through team surveys and worked with the Quashnet Building Based Leadership Team to develop a comprehensive new approach.

Finding an ideal awards system for intermediate grade levels proved challenging, and we recognized that no perfect solution exists. However, I believe our new format addresses many of the concerns raised about the previous system and represents a significant improvement that we're excited to implement this year.

Key Issues We've Addressed:

  • Making awards meaningful: We've refined our criteria to ensure awards truly celebrate specific student achievements
  • Reducing pressure on teachers: New selection processes avoid putting teachers in difficult positions that could damage relationships with students or parents
  • Addressing inclusivity concerns: Previously, in many classes, only 3-4 students would not receive awards, creating an uncomfortable dynamic for those students
  • Preventing social discomfort: Our new format helps avoid embarrassment for students receiving multiple awards while peers receive none
  • Clarifying awards vs. recognitions: We've established clear distinctions between what constitutes an award versus a recognition
  • Improving family communication: Parents will now receive advance notification when their child is receiving an award so they can attend
  • Enhancing transparency: We're providing clearer information to students and families about how awards are determined

Our New Format:

Rather than holding grade-level assemblies at the end of the school year, we'll present awards during our morning Zoom announcements. Beginning Monday, May 12, we'll announce one award each morning, with the final award presented on the second-to-last day of school.

Students receiving an award will be invited to the main office to accept it in person. Families will be notified the week before their child receives an award, including which award they'll receive and on which day, so they can join us in the office if they wish. When students arrive at the office, we'll present them with their award and take photos with their peers and family members who attend.

Attached below, you'll find our complete awards plan, including descriptions of each award, the specific days they'll be presented during morning announcements, and the criteria used to determine recipients.

WearPurpleforMilitaryChildren-Friday,April18

The United States Department of Defense recognizes April as the Month of the Military Child. This recognition is especially important for Quashnet School as we have many students whose parents serve in the military. Our community includes families with parents who serve across all branches of the armed forces, with a particularly strong representation from the Coast Guard at the bases in Sandwich and Woods Hole.

To support and recognize the unique challenges children of military families face in their daily lives, we are asking everyone to wear purple on Friday, April 18, 2025. We've learned that neighboring school districts also plan to participate on the same day.

This day shows our solidarity and appreciation for the resilience of our military children.

CareerDay

Last year we had more professionals come and present to students on Career Day than ever before, and this year we're hoping to increase this even more. Professionals can now come in person and also Zoom with classes, which allows professionals in locations around the world to reach out students.

If you are a professional or know a professional who would be willing to attend and present on career day to our students, please scan the QR below to sign up or click this link.
