Attention 6th Grade Families: On Monday, April 28th (first day back from spring break), we will hold an important grade level meeting for all 6th students during school to prepare them for all the events between now and the end of the school year. It is an incredibly busy time for sixth grade students as the prepare for their transition to MMHS next year.
Quashnet School PTO Leadership Opportunity
As we approach the end of another successful school year, our PTO finds itself at an important crossroads. Our current PTO President, Victoria Haire, and her family have received military orders and will be relocating to Texas this summer. We are incredibly grateful for Victoria's leadership and dedication to our school community!
New Approach to Student Awards at Quashnet
During my first spring at Quashnet last year, I received consistent feedback from teachers, students, and parents that our end-of-year student awards format needed improvement. In response, I gathered input from staff through team surveys and worked with the Quashnet Building Based Leadership Team to develop a comprehensive new approach.

We're excited to announce that Quashnet will be hosting Richard Guerry, a nationally recognized speaker on internet safety, social media, cyberbullying, and digital citizenship. Mr. Guerry speaks to students in grades 3-12 across the country, and we've been fortunate to secure his presentation at no cost to our district through a grant partnership with Bay Cove in Hyannis. Presentation Schedule - Tuesday, April 29
Each presentation is specifically tailored to the age group attending. I was able to meet with Mr. Guerry on zoom to hear about the difference between the two presentations. What Students Will Learn
Following these presentations, Mrs. Pons will reinforce these lessons during Library and DLCS classes, addressing any questions students may have and expanding on key concepts. This content aligns with Massachusetts digital literacy learning standards. Why This Matters for Our School While online safety challenges affect students globally, we've experienced specific issues at Quashnet, including conflicts that begin in evening group chats and carry into school the next day, as well as problematic interactions between students on gaming platforms like Roblox and Fortnite. Mr. Guerry's visit is particularly relevant and valuable for our community. For more information about Mr. Guerry and his work, please visit: https://www.iroc2.org/Internet_safety_speaker I appreciate your partnership in promoting online safety for our students. If you have any questions, please contact me directly at eswitzer@mpspk12.org. |

In conjunction with the scheduled assembly by online safety expert Richard Guerry, we're pleased to inform you that members of the Teen TASK (Taking a Stand for Kids) Force from Mashpee Middle-High School will also be visiting our school on the same day. This student-led group will be delivering an important educational program that complements Mr. Guerry's presentation on online safety and internet use. About The Presenters The Teen TASK Force (Takes A Stand for Kids) is a student organization dedicated to keeping children safe in our community. These high school students work to raise awareness about important issues and teach younger students how to stay safe and seek help from trusted adults when needed. Presentation Content The presentation will include:
Purpose of the Presentation The goal is to equip our students with knowledge about online safety in a supportive, age-appropriate manner. The high school students will share practical guidance on recognizing potentially unsafe situations online and knowing when and how to seek help from trusted adults. If you have any questions or concerns about this presentation, please don't hesitate to contact the school office.
Thank you for your continued support in keeping our students safe and informed. |

In the meeting, students will receive a detailed calendar of all important events and information for the remainder of the school year. I recommend posting this calendar on your refrigerator or somewhere visible at home for frequent reference. During this meeting, I'll also review behavioral expectations to in hopes that everyone can enjoy the spring while staying safe and avoiding disciplinary issues before they leave Quashnet in June. This information is helpful to pay attention to since the last couple months of grade 6 gets very busy. |

During my first spring at Quashnet last year, I received consistent feedback from teachers, students, and parents that our end-of-year student awards format needed improvement. In response, I gathered input from staff through team surveys and worked with the Quashnet Building Based Leadership Team to develop a comprehensive new approach. Finding an ideal awards system for intermediate grade levels proved challenging, and we recognized that no perfect solution exists. However, I believe our new format addresses many of the concerns raised about the previous system and represents a significant improvement that we're excited to implement this year. Key Issues We've Addressed:
Our New Format: Rather than holding grade-level assemblies at the end of the school year, we'll present awards during our morning Zoom announcements. Beginning Monday, May 12, we'll announce one award each morning, with the final award presented on the second-to-last day of school. Students receiving an award will be invited to the main office to accept it in person. Families will be notified the week before their child receives an award, including which award they'll receive and on which day, so they can join us in the office if they wish. When students arrive at the office, we'll present them with their award and take photos with their peers and family members who attend. Attached below, you'll find our complete awards plan, including descriptions of each award, the specific days they'll be presented during morning announcements, and the criteria used to determine recipients. |
